Why most departments don't use laser/LIDAR:

•Line of Sight: Laser requires a clear view of the vehicle since it operates in a straight line

•Good Weather: Lidar can struggle in rain, fog, or heavy snow due to light scattering

•Stationary Use: Most lidar guns are handheld or tripod-mounted because they need stability for accurate readings

•Open exposure: Laser/LIDAR cannot be used through glass (car windows) which is why it is primarily used by motorcycle officers rather than patrol cars

•Cost: LIDAR guns cost significantly more than radar units and can't be used in the above situations
